GENESIS 1:1

In the beginning,
God created the
heavens and the earth.

THE FIRST WORDS OF SCRIPTURE
SCROLL TO BEGIN

From Void to Union

A sacred progression from darkness into light, from solitude into covenant.

The Void and the Word

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Imago Dei

So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

Humanity bears the very image of the Creator — dignity, purpose, and the capacity for covenant love.

The Breath of Life

Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

Formed from the dust yet animated by the very breath of God — a living soul, made for relationship.

Serene and expansive natural landscape at dawn, peaceful yet with a sense of longing — representing that it was not good for man to be alone

It Was Not Good

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”

The first declaration of incompleteness in all of creation. God himself identified the need for companionship.

Bone of My Bones

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.
“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

The first marriage. The first covenant. The pattern for every marriage that would follow.

God’s Design for Marriage

Throughout Scripture, marriage is portrayed as a profound picture of covenant love, sacrifice, and unbreakable union.

EPHESIANS 5:25
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.
The standard of love is nothing less than the cross.
PROVERBS 18:22
He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.
A gift of grace, not a right to be demanded.
HEBREWS 13:4
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
Marriage is sacred ground.
SONG OF SOLOMON 8:6-7
Set me as a seal upon your heart,
as a seal upon your arm,
for love is strong as death...
“Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it.”

What God Has Joined Together

MARK 10:6-9 (ESV)
“But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.

Marriage is not merely a human contract.
It is a divine covenant — a living picture of Christ and His church.
